I am a cradle Episcopalian.  I grew up at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Seattle where I was an acolyte, Sunday school teacher, LEM (lay Eucharistic minister), and eventually the acolyte director.  I also participated in the diocesan summer camp program, the diocesan high-school youth churchman (HYC) conferences and the Boy Scouts of America where I earned the God and Country Churchman award and Eagle Scout.

After college work took me to Michigan.  At St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in downtown Rochester, Michigan I was a LEM, sang in the choir and served as acolyte director.  I was also an assistant Scoutmaster, and later, Scoutmaster for a Boy Scout troop.

Work eventually brought me back to Washington State.  At St. Antony’s Episcopal Church, Silverdale I sang in the choir and served as LEM.  St. Antony’s also invited me to serve on the Bishop’s Committee (February 1996 through January 1999).  Once again I involved myself with Scouting as a trainer and as a unit leader.

In 2002 I joined the Peace Corps.  I was sent to Janjang Bureh, The Gambia, West Africa.  Here I was given the opportunity to read the lessons at the local Methodist church (the only Christian church on the island).  Armitage, the school where I taught, began each assembly with both Muslim and Christian prayers.  I was asked to lead the Christian prayers on several occasions.  I also was involved with the Scout program locally and nationally.

In 2004 I returned to St. Antony’s Episcopal Church, Silverdale.  Since then I have joined the choir, served as LEM, acolyte director and completed an unexpired term on the Bishop’s Committee.  I also resumed my activity with Scouting.

In 2007 I began a discernment process.  During this process I have been seeking how I am called to serve God in the future.  This process continues to be very rewarding for me.  Presently, among other things, it has raised me up to answer the call for missionary work.

It is so good to hear from you Charles. Elisabeth Demmon forwarded your email today and from it I connected to your blog. I will be following your adventures and growth. The weather here is warm and sunny this weekend (Feb 6 – 7). The Superbowl is today. The East Coast is buried under over two feet of snow with more on the way next week. More later. Let me me know if you get this.

Thank you for your wonderful pictures, Charles. It is so good to see your living quarters well-appointed and how graciously you have been received. The sunshine in your pictures looks so inviting! We are in the midst of a string of dark, rainy days. See you basking in the sun makes me smile. How hot is it?

      Good morning Kathy,

I just saw a paper in the hostel this morning. I still can’t read the Telugu; however, when I translated the centegrade temperatures for Hyderabad yesterday’s temperatures were approximately 86 F and 65 F. Naturally, I am at a distance from Hyderabad; however, the other cities ploted on the graph of the sub-continent showed temperatures that varied by only 2 C or less. Please try to stay warm and dry.

      Peace,
      Charles
